These are 9 questions Luke Fryer asked Ozeki-sensei.

5. How did Shouyou-kan come to be?

In 1987 I started Daito Ryu AikiBudo Daitokan Kyushusoshibu Fukuoka Dojo. I started here in Fukuoka because it is my home town and a dojo did not exist. I began this dojo under Ootsuka sensei. I supervised this dojo in the beginning. Later the Kyushu branch changed to Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu Takumakai. Their home dojo is in Osaka.

Okabayashi sensei was the head of the Takumakai dojo teaching department. In 1995 Okabayashi separated from Takumakai and began his own school, Hakuhokai. The Fukuoka dojo then became the Fukuoka prefecture Hakuhokai main dojo.

2002, August Okabayashi sensei founded Hakuho-ryu Aiki budo style. My passion had always been for old style Japanese martial arts and I felt a strong connection to the name Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu. For these reasons I chose to continue with Daito Ryu and began Shouyou-kan Daito ryu Aiki Jujutsu.

My qualifications are: Shodan : Received from Takeda Tokimune Soke Sensei NiDan : Takumakai Mori Hakaru Sensei SanDan: Hakuhokai Okabayashi Shogen Sensei YonDan: Hakuhokai Okabayashi Shogen Sensei GoDan: Wakeijyuku Ootsuka Toranosuke Sensei Chuuden Mokuroku: Wakeijyuku Ootsuka Toranosuke Sensei Okuden Mokuroku: Wakeijyuku Ootsuka Toranosuke Sensei

Shouyou-kan's meaning comes from Laotzu's teachings. Shouyou means to go for a walk, during this walk remain flexible and open. It also means to be free like a cloud in the sky.
